This summer, Community Tourism UK submitted evidence to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Tourism Inquiry into the future of the sector.

Within our submission, we argue that UK tourism policy should evolve from a predominantly promotional and volume-driven model towards a community enabled destination stewardship model in which tourism success is measured not only by visitor expenditure, but by housing resilience, workforce stability, local value retention, environmental capacity and resident well-being.

To support this transition, CTUK makes five principal recommendations:

1. Resident representation and community participation should be formally embedded within tourism governance structures.
2. Tourism policy should be fully integrated with housing, spatial planning and short-term let regulation.
3. Visitor levy powers should be expanded through transparent local reinvestment frameworks.
4. Establishment of a dedicated UK Community Tourism Development Fund.
5. National tourism measurement frameworks should be reformed to reflect destination impacts and long term resilience.
